BUILDING YOUR PERSONAL BRAND AS A STUDENT

Personal branding may sound like something reserved for celebrities and influencers, but it is not. Every student already has a reputation, whether intentional or not. The way people describe your work ethics, character, appearance and abilities form your personal brand.

branding

For example, there is always that one colleague who is so prim and proper, then another who you can count on to get the job done, and then, that one person who always looks unkempt or even the tardy one. All these go to say that everyone is branded by their most prominent attributes. The good news is that you can shape that reputation through small but deliberate actions.

personal branding

Here are small steps that help in building your personal brand as a student:

1.       Be Known for Something Positive:

A strong personal brand often begins with a simple question. What do people know you for? Some students become known for leadership, others for academic excellence, creativity, or reliability. Consistency in behaviour gradually builds recognition.

2.       Show Up and Contribute:

As a common thing in universities, there is always that student who suddenly finds their voice only when attendance is about to be taken, or whenever they are online, but never physically. A stronger personal brand grows from regular participation. Asking thoughtful questions, contributing ideas, and engaging in academic activities shows commitment.

3.       Share Knowledge and Ideas:

Students who share useful ideas or insights gradually build credibility. This may happen through presentations, writing, academic discussions, or student initiatives. People begin to associate that student with thoughtful contribution.

4.       Put in Effort:

Always be found trying. It is better to be found trying than with zero efforts at all. Ensure that you are on your best and with your A-game for every class, activity, interaction, outfit. This not just helps build a strong reputation for you, but it is very fulfilling and satisfying.

5.       Build an Online Presence:

Today, professional identity also exists online. Maintaining a thoughtful presence on professional platforms like LinkedIn, allows students to showcase projects, skills, and interests. This does not necessarily require constant posting. Even a few meaningful contributions can demonstrate seriousness.

personal branding

Personal branding does not require fame. It develops from consistent behaviour, visible contributions, and a reputation for reliability.
