At this point, “Detty December” is almost a cultural experience in Nigeria. From hangouts and parties to concerts and family outings, everywhere is buzzing. As exciting as it is, it can quietly drain your pocket if care is not taken. But enjoying the season does not have to mean entering January broke and stressed.

Below are some tips on how to have fun without going broke this December:
1. Understand your spending limit:
The first step is understanding your budget. Before the festivities fully begin, take a moment to identify how much you can realistically spend. This includes transport, outings, food, and little “impulse spends.” Once your limit is clear, it becomes easier to say no to activities that go beyond it.
2. Choose experiences, not Excess:
Another smart move is choosing experiences over excess. You do not need to attend every event to enjoy Detty December. Pick a few activities that genuinely excite you and let the rest go. Sometimes, a small hangout with friends, movie nights, or home gatherings can be just as fun as expensive outings.
3. Share Costs When Possible:
Students can also save money by sharing costs. Going out in groups helps with transport, food, and even tickets. Splitting expenses reduces pressure on one person and still allows everyone to enjoy the moment.
4. Stay at home:
This is arguably the easiest tip in the bag. Sometimes, sit down at home and have some personal moments. It could be a ‘Netflix n’ Chill’ thingy, you can try out a new recipe or even a game night too. You could also have friends and family over; that way, you have your own event at home and save yourself some expenses.
5. Remember January:
Lastly, remember January. Detty December is temporary, but January bills are very real. Being financially mindful now saves you from unnecessary stress later. Having fun responsibly allows you to enjoy the season and still step into the new year confidently.
