LEARNING FROM THE PAST FOR THE FUTURE

Dear Fresher,

First off, congratulations on your admission to the university! It is such a big deal, and you should be very proud of yourself. That being said, it is trite that you know that this a new phase of your life, and you don’t just want the opportunity to waste. Picture it like this, the one thing we always ask life for is a second chance to make things right after we look back, but right now, you literally have the chance to get it right the first time, so if I were you, I’d pay attention to the content of this blogpost.

things freshers shouldn't do

Some days back, I put up a post asking staylites to share any mistakes they made in their time, which they wish they could change, and I got quite a number of responses, hence this post.

mistakes you made as a fresher
The post in question

Believe me, this is chance at learning from the past for the future, so without wasting more time, below are some of the responses:

  1. Attend orientation programs because it might help a little. Start reading before your CA Test, and don’t stop after it, don’t think you’d do better during the exam period”- Oluwatobi,

400 Level, Computer science & Engineering, OAU

    advice from someone
  2. "Not understanding how grading system works and not gathering enough GPA in 1st semester. 100 level first semester is just the revision of your secondary school, so it is easier to gather that GPA, it helps when you’re advancing, as the course gets tougher even when you slip, you’re still standing strong on the foundation you’ve built.”-

    Phebe,

500 Level, Food Science and Technology, FUTA.

    advice
  3. "...As a fresher, you should make yourself open to your classmates. You may think isolating yourself would protect you, but Uni is not something you can do on your own. As a fresh student, don’t do life without God. Even as a staylite, don’t do life without God.”-

    Eniola,

    300 Level, Psychology, OAU.

    advice 3
  4. "When I entered OAU, I wasn’t briefed about what departmental tutorials in science courses meant, I was like who needs tutorials when I’m me, you know. I found out when results were coming out that it was 10 marks out of 100 that I had thrown away, I ended up having to beg for a C in a 4 units course, my CGPA is still recovering from the incidence up till date as I unfortunately also missed my CA test in that same course. I submitted a letter to the department that I wasn’t going to be able to take the test for the course unfortunately, the Letter got misplaced by the secretary within transition from the HOD’s office to the lecturer’s office and I had no idea, it taught me how to follow things up till the end in such cases.

Lastly, not understanding the value of course units fully, almost caught me off-guard but thank God for crash reading + electric shocks + caffeine that saved my ass.”-

    Jedidiah,

    500 Level, Mechanical Engineering, OAU

advice from a senior
  1. "Manage your money. Run away from impulse spending"-

    Fatima

    400 Level, Law, OAU.

There are a lot more from where these came from, but for now make do with these, what you would. Do not fail to let me know if you want more of these, and I'll be at your beck and call.

You're welcome!
