The break, that time between sessions when students promise themselves rest, relaxation, and refreshment. Yet somehow, by the end of it, many find themselves even more exhausted than during the semester.
Why? Because there are unspoken codes nearly every student seems to follow once school is on break. Let's get you familiar with some of these codes
Promise Productivity, Embrace Procrastination
You made a lot of plans and you told yourself, “I’ll learn a new skill, read five books, and maybe even start a business.” However, the reality is the endless scrolling, binge-watching, and the ever-reliable “I’ll start on Monday.”
Sleep Like You’re Recovering from War
Breaktime goals often include “catching up on sleep.” In practice, this means waking up at noon, still feeling tired, while staying up until 3 a.m. watching movies or chatting with friends.
Become the Unpaid Household Staff
At home, students quickly transform from “undergraduates” to “available manpower.” Errands, chores, babysitting, all fall under their new unofficial job description, which is often accompanied by: “You’re not doing anything at home.”
Spend Allowance Like There’s No Tomorrow
Allowance or side-hustle income tends to feel bottomless at the start of the break. Fast forward two weeks, and the familiar “urgent 2k” scenarios begin to appear. You can read our post on budgeting for the break here.
Social Life Overload (or Social Ghosting)
Some students fill their calendars with reunions, parties, and catch-ups with old friends. Others prefer the opposite: staying indoors, “resting,” and quietly ignoring every call.
The Food Rule
After a semester of bread and noodles, home-cooked food feels like luxury. Breaks are marked by constant snacking and indulgence, justified by: “I suffered in school, I deserve this.” Sounds familiar?
‘Small Job’ Hustles
Many take up temporary gigs like tutoring, baking, or freelancing, while others only talk about it and never do. The underlying hope is to be able to fund the holiday and next semester’s enjoyment or most importantly survival.
Last-Minute Panic
The break seems endless until resumption is suddenly a day away. That’s when forgotten projects, undone laundry, and unpacked bags all come rushing back alongside a desperate attempt to reset one’s sleep schedule after messing it up during the break
Thus, for students, the break often becomes a mix of rest, responsibility, and rushed decisions. These unspoken “codes” highlight just how uniquely chaotic student breaks can be.
What about you? Which of these codes have you lived through, and what would you add to the list?
